Permission

The topic is Permission. What is Permission?  A dictionary defines Permission as an “agreement to allow something to happen or be done.”  An agreement, an agreement with whom?  Can we do anything without Permission?  How does the Permission process work?

How do we get Permission? Some think, “we allow ourselves to do something” – personal Permission.  Others suggest it comes from outside us.  In either case, Permission is given or granted.

OK, that’s fine but which outsiders give us Permission?  Sources include – religion, teachers, society, laws, customs, parents, family, sacred texts, wise people, officials (e.g., the President) and friends. When we really think about this, rarely do we give ourselves Permission.

On the flip side, how is Permission withheld?  Possibilities include – anger, fear, criticism, example, condemnation, shunning, looks, sneers, voice intonation, and body language.

If these actions withhold Permission, how is Permission given?  Examples include – lack of criticism, thanks, appreciation, example, applause, and gesture – body language (e.g., nods, thumbs up, high fives), speech and voice intonation.

So, how do I give Permission?  I give Permission by smiling, complimenting, boosting, supporting (verbally and non-verbally), including, blessings and with colorful clothes.

How do you give Permission?  Do your words and deeds offer or withhold Permission?  Are you supportive or judgmental?  Are you a Permission giver or Permission withholder?

I submit Permission ultimately comes from within.  However, others exert a profound effect on whether or not we ever grant Permission to ourselves.

Without Permission from whatever source, we can do nothing.  Hence, Permission becomes one of the most critical factors in our lives.
